Jason Wu: One of the most anticipated shows of New York Fashion Week - and it didn't disappoint.
The variety of looks was incredible, though it was all tied together with a classic black, white, grey and red colour scheme, and an abundance of cinched waists (which after seasons of the cocoon was incredibly welcome).
Another theme that emerged throughout the show was the feminine and masculine ratio within the looks; the contrast between tough leather and structure with sheer fabrics and delicate pleats. The effect was almost empowering - women dressed like women, neither macho nor twee.
The array of fabrics and textures was almost as impressive as the designs themselves. Sheer polka dots and striped, leather, lace print, fur, feathers, wool - the combination of them all together was explosive.
Exaggerated shoulders and waists both featured heavily. Shoulders were armored in fur and leather, waists adorned with peplums and feathers. Sheer fabric lent a seductive edge to clothes for cold weather, the hint of skin oozing softness between layers of heavy fabric.
Pleated A-line skirts were paired with stiff collared shirts and biker jackets, tailored trousers with peplums and halternecks, fur shouldered trenches with bare legs, long sleeved crop tops and high waisted trousers, and of course, dresses, ranging from shifts to maxi.
Accessories added even more depth to the various looks. Some models wore classic leather gloves, while others clutched beaded or studded bags in masculine, boxy shapes. The shoes were varied - intricate lace up, peep toe leather boots vs. ribbon tied sandals in a gladiator style, both incredibly striking.
And, last but not least: Coats. Lucky for those of us who live in unsatisfying climates there was a huge range of choice.. Leather and wool trenches showed a refreshing take on the classic, and the standard black biker was given a new lease of life paired with a crisp shirt. There was also beautiful olive brown parkas for those who like it more casual, and long masculine coats for those who really need to keep out the cold. And the white fur. Oh, the white fur! The puffball sleeves and the belted waist were a breath of fresh air for a winter staple.
All in all the Jason Wu's Autumn Winter show had something for everyone, and the variety just made it that much more spectacular while still in keeping with Wu's signature style. Breathtaking.
